Today’s blog post is dedicated to debunking a myth about
mummies: the idea that the mummies will rise from the dead to join the living,
aka mummies as the original zombies.

This is a myth that
exists in regards to mummies, albeit not nearly as popular as other mummy myths
(that will be discussed at a different date since I will be presenting on this
very topic in a couple of weeks). This
myth is an extension of the mummy’s curse myth, coming from the idea that mummies
will rise and enact his own revenge for having his rest disturbed. There is some historical evidence to support
this myth, principally the ideology that the deceased, in the form of the
mummy, would rise again in the afterlife in order to continue where they left
off in life. This is a common theme that
we see in all sorts of cultures that practice anthropogenic mummification. This myth has been popularized by movies,
such as Dawn of the Mummy and the more recent Mummy franchise, and shows, such
as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and many more, which depict mummies rising from the
dead and take their revenge on unsuspecting mortals.

But can this actually happen? Do we need to be worried about an army of
zombies coming out and killing us all?
Think about that for a moment.
Think about where all the mummies are housed around the world, in all of
the museums, and think about that possibility.
Do we need to be scared?
The simple answer is no.
You can all breathe a sigh of relief.
Even if mummies do rise, they probably would not get very far. Why?
Because in general, mummies are in pretty fragile condition when they
are discovered.

The above picture is one such mummy found in northern Chile. These mummies are considered phenomenally
preserved, but even the ones where they are completely intact, they have to be
handled very carefully. There is a
minimum of four people needed to move the mummies, which are moved one at a
time. And again, incredibly carefully,
meaning very slowly and with strong and able bodied individuals. If one of these were to all of a sudden
reanimate, it is not going to get far because it is probably going to fall
apart under its own weight.
But what about other mummies? We find that all other mummies are in similar
dire straits. This same situation
applies to bog bodies, the ice man, the Peruvian mummies, and many more. And Egyptian mummies that were anthropogenically
mummified had all organs removed except the heart, so these mummies could not
physiologically function. Plus, without
brains, they would not know what to do, except for maybe search for
brains.

So while it may be fun to think about, mummies will not be a
threat in the unlikely event that they reanimate and try to take over the world
or enact their revenge or talk about how they were the original zombies. So we can all breathe a sigh of relief and
know that this, as well as the greater mummy’s curse, is just a figment of our
wild imaginations and continued fascinations with the dead.

Some in my family are starting to prepare for "the walking dead" apocalypse. Storing up water and non-perishable food. Wanting to buy guns and bows for the fight against them. There are lots of movies or shows out there that I can think of that glorify these happenings. I too, sometimes think of could it possibly happen, I will not lie. That goes to show you how dang good these movie makers are these days. Then I think, like you said in the blog, that they would not be moving much. They have been buried in the ground or mummified, how would they be able to walk? Their bones would be so brittle, they would be so slow, you could probably walk right up to them and they could not get you.
I know so many people that believe in this stuff. Some to the extent of stock piling food. Each to his own.
Well thank god you put my fears to rest! Now i do not have to worry about stocking up shotgun shells for those pesky mummies. There might be some truth in curses as far as a biological standpoint. There have been instances in the past where anthropologists who have excavated Egyptian remains have in fact turned up dead from some biological calamity. This can be explained in the fact that viruses and bacteria, giving the proper conditions, could survive a long time. Take balsamic vinegar that was placed in the tombs as example, these bottles are still prized and are in fact edible!
I have always been preparing for the zombie apocalypse, however not from mummies. In movies, I have seen mummies being reincarnated through a spirit that heals their bones and gives them supper strength to harm other individuals. This I do not believe. As stated, these are very delicate preserved skeletons and even the slightest bit of movement will probably break them completely.
Thanks for the post!

All those sci-fi fans need mummys and vampires and zombies! To us they are as real as unicorns and dragons.
With shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Walking Dead I often find myself visualizing what I would do if zombies or mummies ever came back to life to attack us all. As a child, i was completely obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and would watch it before school daily accompanied by the occasional nightmare the following night. This post made me laugh and made me grateful that my childhood fear is put to rest. Now when I go to Costco, I won't have to mentally prepare for a zombie apocalypse, so thank you for that!
I just googled "mummies" and found myself mesmerized for a good while. Now, I know some of those photos weren't real, but I was so fascinated! This blog is funny because I never really thought that mummies coming back to life would be a real threat, but after you breaking it down and backing up why it physically would be impossible, I feel like it has been confirmed that it can never happen and I can sleep better now. Haha
Knowing that Mummies are not a threat, when seeing them in person for yourself when you did studies, did you feel different seeing them right in front of you then on a picture?
At least for me, it was amazing to be up close with that sort of history, but it was also in some ways sad to see the mummified children. There is nothing I could have done for them as they died many thousands of years ago, but I couldn't help but mourn lives incompletely lived.
Do people today still mummify their self?
People can pay private companies to do this. I cannot recall, however, if any other group still does this or not.
I ever thought about how fragile the bones are, but it makes sense. I've never really been concerned with mummies coming alive, but now I can explain to friends that believe such things.
Why is that they remove all other organs except the heart?

I guess I never really understood the ecitment behind mummies but now I understand why. It's fascinating to know that the heart isn't removed but all the other oragns are removed. . . interesting.
I know so many people that believe in this stuff. but I really dont
When did mummies become a household name for scary movies? How were they popularized in the USA as monsters that we are terrified off. I can understand Werewolves, and even Vampires, but Mummies??
I do not have a specific date, but I'm guessing it happened around the time Carter and his team opened King Tut's tomb.
I personally never bought into the mummies coming alive group. But I believe that a widespread infection that can greatly alter the body and mind set turning an individual into something similar to what you see in The Walking Dead may be possible. If you consider all the disease and drugs in existence today and the terrible side affects they carry you may consider possibilities of such things becoming real. My family has always been a strong believer in having our own weapons to protect ourselves rather the attacker is dead or alive.
This is an interesting article even though there are a lot of people that believe that mummies can come back to life but it is not true.

First I never knew that the idea of zombies came from mummies. It does make sense though. The only reason I would expect zombies or mummies to come from the dead is if you believe in magic. Sciencetifically I believe that can never happen. Unless scientists one day just figure out how to bring people back from the dead. But that would be very hard to do where I don’t see it ever happening. Even if they did come back, how would they function? They have very old fragile bones that would probably snap in half if they tried to do anything. They wouldn’t serve any purpose.
Tgis is a cool post about myths concerning mummies. It was interesting to learn that they were believed to rise again in the afterlife, not in the actual present world as it had been portrayed in many movies and other pop culture.
