This blog has featured a number of anthropologists who work in various professional fields, including education, public policy, medicine, and more. Most of the applied anthropologists profiled have come from sociocultural, biological, or archaeological anthropology, leaving a gap in the applied anthropologists working with their linguistic anthropological backgrounds. Today’s blog post seeks to remedy that deficiency by featuring sociolinguist Mackenzie Price (Figure 1).
Price received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University, and she went on to earn Masters degrees from the University of California-Davis and Georgetown University. She also earned her Doctorate from Georgetown University. With each of her degrees she specialized in a specific aspect of linguistic study, from second language learning to sociolinguistics, which is the connection between communication, culture, and human behavior.
She worked as an Adjunct Instructor for several years before entering into the private sector working as a sociolinguist, first as a Principal Strategist for FrameWorks Institute. FrameWorks Institute is a nonprofit organization that utilizes social science methods to research how the public understands social issues and then transforms that information into fitting their clients’ needs. This often takes the form in creating educational or marketing materials that better informs the audience of the clients’ intended message(s). Price’s role was to provide strategic language choices and approaches that enhanced the client’s message in order to successfully communicate it to a broad audience. She worked on a number of projects during her time at FrameWorks Institute before eventually moving on to DotDash Meredith. Here she works as the Editorial Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion, and her responsibilities include developing anti-bias language and editorial policies regarding public health issues concerning race and racial bias.
In a testimonial that Price provided the American Anthropological Association about applied anthropological careers she noted how anthropology can provide individuals with a wealth of opportunities. As a linguist she particularly highlighted the benefits of understanding linguistics by stating:
“Really, you can do anything you want to do and be a linguist. Every field has a piece of it somewhere that’s interested in social relationships and society, and thinking about language-how people interact with one another-is a part of that, and that’s a skill that you can take with you different places.”

I love this information about Dr. Mackenzie Price! She is definitely phenomenal in her field. Seeing black women be in big positions and being great at what they can do is so inspiring and motivating. I see that Dr. Price is an Editorial Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion at the frameWorks Institute. I really want to know more to see if she has included any AAVE in her linguistic studies!
Mackenzie Price was dedicated and invested in her career. Seeking many new opportunities and degrees she was able to identify many problems and solutions in her field of world. Expanding her knowledge and understanding of these different cultures, human behaviors, and communication skills helped her prevail in doing something she admired. Mackenzie Price contributed to a wide range of roles that helped better deliver information thoroughly in an appropriate context to other individuals. Having a profound outlook on social problems and other controversies sparked new ways on how to deliver the most effective response fluently. She encouraged individuals to seek higher improving and intellectual essential qualities so others would be able to grasp accurate information. Being a linguist allows you to make connections with all types of people which each person can benefit from. Good Communication is an important factor to have and continues to be a questionable aspect of life.
All her degrees are amazing.my dream school was actually Stanford. Her being a sociolinguist is actually pretty cool. I think I’ve heard about frameworks institute. I didn't know it was a nonprofit. I’ve always thought about it: if you work for a nonprofit do you get paid a certain way?I would never know. Her ability to make simple translations that benefit the clients makes her a great asset. She got a new job with health issues like racial issues. This proves that anthropology can benefit you in everyday jobs you will never know unless you meet someone that works that job. She had a lot of job opportunities being an anthropologist. I believe every piece of a job has a link to anthropology because all these jobs and it’s just a great degree to get into.
Dr. Price gives a new insight into the thought of careers and the correspondance and incorporation of anthropogy, specifically linguistics. She offers advice that doing anything will still result in the understanding of relationships, language, communication, and people. One connection can lead to another and you can make the most of it and still study through any career and opportunity.

After reading this article about Mackenzie Price, I found a little motivation to continue my education after I receive my undergraduate degree! I seen that she pushed herself and was able to receive her Masters degree. Once she did that, I was pretty much up from there! I love how she is striving to be the best in her career and continues to improve. This shows that nothing in life is easy. Everything takes hard work and dedication! You will receive what you put in!
