Happy Birthday, Dian Fossey!
Dian Fossey turns 82 today. Her pioneering work with gorillas has enhanced both biological and anthropological understandings of these apes. More information can be found here.

This woman was an amazing human being. She lived with gorillas for a long time and they became her family. You could say she was obsessed with the gorillas. If I am not mistaken, the movie "Gorillas in the Mist" was about her. These gorillas were one of the most important things in her life, and we learned so much from her observing and participating with them.
I'm really bad with names, so I didn't realize until looking at her biography that "Gorillas in the Mist" was based on her work and story. I loved the book and wasn't as disappointed in the movie as I thought I'd be. She did amazing work.
Did she influence Jane Goodal in any way? I'm sorry if i misspelled her name. It seems like she was a wonderful woman who pioneered the study of apes as ancestors.
This was such an inspiring, yet awfully sad ending to a beautiful life. It shows a lot when someone puts their life savings into something that is completely not for the better of themselves individually, but for something for the greater good, especially for another animal. When I was reading about her escape during the Civil War, I was beginning to think that she was killing during this time by the war, but the way she was murdered was horrendous. "Hacked" is such a terrible word and I cant even imagine what she went through, all because of her love of animals. It is a shame that people who are trying their best to save humanity and the things we live with, are usually the ones most criticized for their work. Ultimately, costing her, her life.
