How has colonization affected different regions and has the colonizer had an effect on this?

For most, when we think of colonization, we think Africa and the Americas, and we think colonial masters from Spain, France, England, and to a lesser extent Holland and Portugal. We think of slavery, mining, sugar, tea, and trading. When the Western hemisphere, more particularly the Americas, saw the arrival of the Europeans there was great conflict and war between the indigenous populations and Europeans- as the natives fought for their culture and land while the Europeans attempted to force their Western beliefs and dominance upon them. Most of the native populations were driven out or became extinct at the hands of the Europeans. The Europeans over time brought slaves from Africa, which they were now colonizing, as well, and the West thrived under the ownership of the Europeans. Plantations were established and colonial reign flourished. Infrastructure was established throughout the Western world and trade between the colonies and Europe was common place. Some regions fought for and gained their independence, then slavery was abolished. Colonialism ended and many of these countries continued their path to development.

African regions were treasured for their raw material and mining capabilities, but because of there being so many different tribes within even one territory they were a bit more difficult to contain for a prolonged period. There was always resistance from rebel groups referred to as guerrilla armies. The European regions, however, united in the way they would deal with African regions and it was generally a profitable venture for them. It was more difficult to subdue the people and today we still see many of them maintain significant aspects of their culture, often with many still speaking their native tongue as well as the language of the colonizing country. Significant infrastructure was also put into these territories as their produce was significant to the maintained wealth of the Europeans. Remote native regions still exist, we see of Tambutum, but this was because these territories offered little in way of profit to the Europeans or were just too far away.

In the East while the English were able to benefit from the tea and spice trade these regions were too established in their culture with significantly large populations and much untamed territories for the English influence to be able to dominate. There was always a level of hostility by the indigenous populations that did not allow the Europeans to overpower these regions and alter customs significantly. While some infrastructure was set up traditions and general way of life was not altered outside of introducing certain modern technologies.

The Tambutum region was not as lucky as some of these Eastern or Western colonies. Their cultural practices were altered significantly but still they were not brought along economically like certain coastal African regions or American colonies. They are left like those tribes of Africa still practicing traditional beliefs but after seeing a glimpse of what the future holds but not knowing how to climb to that future. The African tribes have an advantage because this is what they know; who they are and they are not left with a yearning of things they know nothing of or do not understand. So with this we indeed wonder as to the effects of colonization on territories and how the conquering country affected this.

Very interesting article about colonization and how it has affected different regions. Always have heard about it but never saw anything really in depth.

hi my name is Avery Davis, and I think colonizing should happen only in a peaceful manner. Just like when the Europeans came and basically killed off the Native Americans for land. At this point it is safe to say that they could've done that in a way more better. Even when the African American slave trade happened, why did they have to put Africans to slavery for them to colonize? As I stated earlier in order to colonize we would have to do it in peace and not takeover.

It is very sad that countries who have colonized others have disregarded the native people. Only if the colonizer can benefit from the colonized country will it help it to prosper. I think humans have a tendency to be selfish.

I agree with you 100%. I think that the least we could do if we are coming to colonize a culture is to be civil w/them and understand that everyone does not wish to have a western lifestyle. I actually don't blame the natives for being hostile with the Europeans for trying to overpower them and alter their culture. this reminds me of the recent story of the man Allen Chau who tried to convert the tribe on the forbidden North Sentinel Island, needless to say the tribe didn't like his attempts and killed him bows and arrows before he even reached their soil.

When I began to read this blog post I began to remember how I was always fascinated by colonization. I enjoy learning more about the trading side of colonization such as, the tea and spice trade. I have always found it sad and disturbing that the Europeans would run off Native Americans for their land.

I love learning about colonization. I dislike the fact that we as humans are selfish. The trading that goes with colonization is very interesting. Europeans always seemed to act like they were the only group of humans on earth and it sucks because the Native Americans could have helped them in many ways

I enjoy learning on colonization. Learning new facts about different countries to me is interesting. One thing I didn't find to thrilling that Native Americans were basically thrown off their land by Europeans.

Learning about colonization has always been a thing of mine. Seeing as though people can be stingy and it seems as though they don't want to prosper with the help of another culture. Things may of happened differently if people actually agreed on something.

Before this blog I do not believe I really knew about or understood colonization, I just heard about it and thought I understood. This blog helped me understand how relate colonization with being selfish.

I find it very interesting that you chose to group the regular Colonized countries and thoughts that come to mind, but still went on to speak about them. It was also very interesting that you continued on by taking the perspective of the Europeans to explain your thoughts.
However what about the impacts of African Diaspora?

Colonization has gone on for so long and I have always heard about it but this article really helped me understand the depths of it more.

Its sad that us humans are selfish. It's not a good thing to be. Also the fact that the Europeans act like they were that only ones to exist is ridiculous because the Native Americans and the Europeans could be helpful to each other.

I dislike the fact that Europeans ran the Native Americans off just to take their land. They need to understand that their not the only people on earth. This article really helped me understand colonization a bit more.

I dislike learning about colonization simply for the fact that happens to people because other want to come in and take over something that isn't there. Do you wonder what would happened if they compromised? This reminds me of what happened with the Romani peopleI just read about

I find it interesting how far reaching and deep the effects of colonization are on the people affected by it
