It's amazing that an entire civilization can just decline and disappear like that. I wonder if the new city is going to tell us how the civilization disappeared. I wonder if it was a drought, war, or they used up all the neighboring resources. Its weird that people would just abandon cities. Its really cool that a city can just stay hidden in the jungle this long as well. There are probably more out there that we still haven't found.

You are correct in your claim that there is probably more out there. While I myself have never worked in the jungles of Belize, Mexico, or Guatemala, I know others who have, and they continually comment about the thick and dangerous jungles, which make it difficult to navigate and not very appealing to investigate. I suspect more discoveries will be made in the future as new technologies happen. Google Earth has already been instrumental in identifying potential sites in other regions of the world, and it may be useful at some point in this region, as well.

This is so cool! However, the article could have expanded on how the site was laid out etc... I found a better article that explains how it was found here: http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/22/4453686/mexico-mayan-city-chactun-discovered. Within this article you can find how your Dumpster diving articles would come in handy. We could have known about this site 20-30 yrs earlier if your practices could have been followed. The civilization has been lost, but not entirely. Most people of Mexican decent have Mayan and Aztecan dna within them.

Actually, the Maya people still very much exist. Their ancient civilization that is excavated by archaeologists fell many centuries ago, but the people still very much exist today.

I believe the reason the site lay out was not published was to deter looters from going there.

This is great to know that there are still people out there who are interested in the history and preservation of ancient cities and artifacts that are found. Without these discoveries, many cultures would and could possibly still be dying till this day. Ancient cultures like the Mayans heavily rely on ancient customs that are still around today. Just like Native American cultures, they still have specific forms of art, foods, and social institutions that were stated in our textbook. Discoveries like this not only preserve the cultures, but also give them more distinct outlooks on the lives that they live today, in effort to still live the life of their ancestors.

With the ancient civilization collapsing many of years ago where would the people be founded on the map today? And are there customs still the same as they use to be?

I don't believe that the Maya's just vanished and didn't leave any evidence behind. In my opinion that would be very unrealistic cause there's always some kind of evidence left behind.

Yes, I love the Maya's it is said that a great flood wiped them out. But these individuals was a group of indigenous people, who were smart mathematically. I focused more on their calendar, its interesting.

I still find it almost impossible for an entire civilization to just up and disappear. The only question i have now is if they are going to figure out how the civilization disappeared in what seemed to be the blink of an eye.
