The old adage goes something like this: “Pursue your passions because then it won’t feel like you are working a day in your life.” Many people will scoff at this sentiment, but it really rings true for Sandra Paccione, an archaeologist turned jewelry maker. Paccione always had an affinity toward art. This was born out of her experiences visiting various art museums in her home city of Brooklyn, New York. Despite this interest she earned her bachelor’s degree in anthropology from City of New York. She entered into professional archaeological work, but she could not shake her desire to work in the art. It was while she was inventorying, sorting, and cataloguing pottery sherds that she kept thinking to herself about how these pieces of broken pottery could be transformed into beautiful pieces of jewelry. These thoughts continued as she took a job working at a vintage clothing store in New Orleans, where she would spend her free time taking apart and recreating vintage pieces.

In 2015 she decided to take the plunge and opened her
jewelry line, History Time Traveler. Her
jewelry is inspired by her experiences in archaeology and history in that she
repurposes vintage pieces into new works of wearable art. She enjoys employing the notions of “other
people’s garbage” (a phrase common in archaeological research) and giving it
new light in her work. The
archaeological and historical influences in her work can be seen in various
pieces (see Figure 1). Her dedication to
her craft has earned her recognition from Etsy.
In 2024 her work was awarded the Etsy Design Award for Jewelry. Paccione's work is available for sale on her website and her Etsy store.

Sandra Paccione’s journey from archaeologist to a jewelry designer is interesting and motivating. Her skill to turn old and historical pieces into wearable art is interesting. Congratulations on the Etsy Design Award it is well deserved.
Sandra Paccione is a great example of someone turning their passions into a career. The way that Paccione incorporates pieces found through her anthropology work into her jewelry is inspiring and further proves that you can have more than one passion and use them together to create something beautiful and unique. Her Etsy Award demonstrates that people appreciate her ability to repurpose older pieces that otherwise may be seen as invaluable, into something new.
I adore Sandra Paccione’s journey from archaeologist to jewelry maker I think it is such an inspiring example of how passions can evolve and intersect in unexpected ways. I really admire how she took her experience handling pottery sherds and transformed that into a completely new, creative outlet. Her ability to repurpose “other people’s garbage” into meaningful, wearable art is not only resourceful but also deeply reflective of her anthropological roots. Winning the Etsy Design Award is such a well deserved recognition of her unique vision. It’s a great reminder that anthropology isn’t limited to academia it can live on in art, storytelling, and personal expression.
Sandra Paccione’s journey from archaeologist to jewelry is truly inspiring! Although she earned a degree in anthropology and worked in archaeology, her love for art remained. That creative spark grew during her time at a vintage clothing store, where she began reworking old accessories. In 2015, she launched History Time Traveler, a jewelry line that blends historical inspiration with artistic vision. By transforming discarded materials into meaningful pieces. She brings history into everyday life through her wearable art.
I find it cool that she devoted her life to have a successful jewelry business. The coolest part is how she uses old disposed materials and recycles them to make them into beautiful pieces of jewelry. The recycling part is the most important thing and I admire a woman that works to preserve things in that type of way. I am not going to go find her on etsy and see if I can buy any of her products.
The fact that Paccione was able to give these old artifacts a new purpose and another life is really amazing to me. I believe it takes a special eye to be able to take old things and bring them back to life.
I think Sandra’s story is cool. I love how she mixed two totally different passions together and turned them into something unique. With me learning archaeology over the past few months, I really like how she found a way to mix it with something creative. I’m such a hands on visual learner so seeing how she works with the materials and turns them into something new really got me. It’s like she saw something in what most people would just throw away. I also like how she didn’t ignore her love for art even while working in a completely different field. - Mauriah Taylor
I think that Sandra Paccione’s story is a good example of not giving up on your dreams, and it is never too late to follow them. Her transition from an archaeologist to a jewelry maker is impactful because she still uses the knowledge she learned from being an archaeologist and tied it into something she was passionate about.-Serenity Henderson
